Break-In Damage Lock Repair

The shop's aluminum door has a bent meeting stile and the hookbolt is jammed half out.

In plain words

Break-ins seldom come through the door with the strongest lock. Sliding patio doors are lifted off their track or pried at the latch, the garage man-door carries a light knob lock, a basement walkout is out of sight, and a storefront's narrow-stile deadbolt sits behind a bendable aluminum edge. Each needs its own repair: anti-lift blocks and a foot bolt for the slider, a proper deadbolt and reinforced strike for the side door, a latch guard and repaired stile for the shop. Break-in damage lock repair covers whichever opening was attacked and looks over the others while the tools are already out.

Sound familiar?

The shop's aluminum door has a bent meeting stile and the hookbolt is jammed half out. The alarm did its job and the display is untouched, but the entrance will not close properly and opening time is hours away.

How the visit goes

  1. Does the door still hang true

An impact hard enough to break a strike usually moves the door as well. The locksmith checks that the door sits square in its opening, closes on its weatherstrip without force, and that the bolt lines up with its pocket rather than dragging on the strike lip. Hinge screws are tested for grip, since a kick can pull them from the jamb even on the side that was not attacked, and the hinge leaves are checked for bending. Manufacturers treat strike position, pocket depth and door alignment as working parts of the lock, and a repair that ignores them produces a door that locks badly the day after it was fixed.

  2. Rekeying what a taken key fits

Every cylinder that a missing key could open is rekeyed or replaced before the locksmith leaves. On a serviceable pin-tumbler cylinder, the plug is slid free with a follower so the springs stay put, the bottom pins are exchanged for a new combination and a fresh key is cut; a cylinder that cannot be rekeyed this way is replaced instead. Front, back, side and garage doors are brought onto one new key where their keyways and systems allow it, and the mailbox and padlocks are handled too. Remotes for a garage opener that left in a stolen car are erased from the opener and a new one programmed. The old key still fits the keyway; it simply turns nothing anymore.

  3. Glass and the reach-in problem

When entry came through glass beside the door, the lock was never the weakness, and the follow-up is about the glass. A tested security-film system, applied with its specified frame attachment, can slow an arm from passing through the sidelight, or the pane is replaced with laminated glass by a glazier. Where the layout allows, the deadbolt is repositioned beyond arm's reach of the glass. A thumb-turn stays on the inside, because it lets everyone leave without hunting for a key, and a keyed inside cylinder trades one risk for a worse one if there is ever a fire. The result keeps the intruder out and the way out clear.

What affects the quote

  1. Keys cut

New keys are cut from the fresh pinning and counted separately: enough for each adult, the dog walker and a trusted neighbour, however many you decide you need.

  2. Strike and hinge reinforcement

A security strike box, hinge reinforcement plates and three-inch screws on both sides of the door are listed as their own items, so you can see what strengthens the frame beyond replacing what broke.

  3. Method of jamb repair

Bonding a split with epoxy and a repair plate is one line; fitting a new section of wood is another; a full jamb leg through a carpenter is quoted by that trade.

What to have ready

  • Is there glass beside the door or in it?
  • Is the damage to the lock, the frame, the door edge or the glass, or several?
  • Are there other doors or a garage entry on the same key?

Break-In Damage Lock Repair: questions

Questions
What should I have ready when I call about a break-in?

Whether the police have been called and any occurrence number; whether everyone is safe and the property is empty of intruders; which opening was forced and whether it closes at all; whether the damage is to the lock, the frame, the door or the glass; whether keys, remotes or codes were taken; whether you own, rent or manage the property; and whether there is glass beside the door. Photos on your phone help the locksmith bring the right hardware.

Can the locksmith start before the police have finished?

The door is left as found until the police have seen it or said they will not attend. What can happen in the meantime is planning: the locksmith can look at the damage, photograph it, measure for hardware and prepare the temporary securing so that the moment the scene is released the work begins. Nothing is removed or moved before then, because the marks on the door are part of the report.

Is the lock that was forced still usable?

Sometimes, and the locksmith tests it honestly. A deadbolt that stayed thrown while the frame gave way may be undamaged, though a kick can bend the bolt where it crossed the gap or crack the housing. A cylinder that was twisted, drilled or punched is finished. Reused hardware must operate as smoothly as new with the door open and closed; if it hesitates, it is replaced, because a lock that took a blow tends to fail at the worst moment.
